1983

The way that men are portrayed struck me as the most interesting. These videos do a great job of exposing the male sterotype. The father is a big guy that you would think is tough, the guy at the bar is disrespectful to the girls, the father in Love is a Battlefield kicks his daughter out of the house. But after each of these sterotypes is shown the girls defeat the guys. The strong father is put in an arm bar by his "little" daughter, guy at the bar is embarassed by getting drink in his face and scared off by a group of girls, and the father who kicked his daughter out begins to have regrets about what he did. I think that Love Is a Battlefield had the strongest message. Altough Girls Just Want to Have Fun has a strong message, the topics that are explored in Love Is a Battlefield are much deeper. Love Is a Battlefield shows what girls have been shown to become. Homeless girls are forced to live a life not of their own but by what they are told to do by a man. The video shows how it affects the girls and how they should rise up against what has been forced upon them. For my video, I chose This Is War by 30 Seconds to Mars. The video's opening two slides lays the base for many of the claims shown throughout the video. The quote "If we do not end war, war will end us" by H.G. Wells kicks off the video. The band makes the first claim about the video without the viewer having to even think about it, "This is a song about peace" flashes right after the quote by Wells. I also claim that this song is not a song about peace at all. I say this because in the lyrics it says for the chorus "To the right, to the left, we will fight to the death! To the edge of the earth, it's a brave new world, it's a brave new world". While these lyrics are being used images and videos are flashed of Marines shooting rifles, bombs exploding, IED's blowing up in front of coalition trucks, and Marines kicking in doors. The lead singer is also shown shooting his weapon throughout the entire video either into the air or in random directions. Firing a weapon and talking about fighting to the death are not a basis for peace. The videos from the article didn't really make me think about my own video. My video deals with war and the consequences of people's actions, when the videos in the article focused on the struggles of women.
