After reading article and watching the music videos, the fact that seemingly simple catchy songs can have such a complex underlying meaning really caught my attention. The songs themselves have catchy lyrics and beats, but without analyzing the songs the meaning is often lost. I think that "Love is a Battlefield" had an overall more powerful statement about women's takeover of patriarchal ideas. Her video representation of the song really aloud you to see the negative connotations that can often be placed on women for no real reasons.
"What It's Like" by Everlast makes a very profound statement American society. Everlast asks you to take a step back from initial judgement, and to put yourself in someone else shoes before you negatively judge them. It speaks of how no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. The song also symbolically looks at the perfect American life. And how no one can ever reach the Utopian "American" way of life, and people are often left on the outside looking in.
