Tv vs. MTV
The idea of paying for free television stood out to me the most. I never sat back and thought about how much time goes in to choosing commercials for the particular group of people who they expect to watch the show. It was very interesting when it was pointed out how the price of the ads is likely to get passed on to us in the price of the items we buy. I never thought about how that can be done before. One of my favorite shows is Sons of Anarchy. I honestly can't say what type of commercials they show because I hate watching them and would rather channel surf for a few minutes. I can say that the show is very big on male ego and what society tells us is "man". Throughout the seasons I have seen so many violent acts/fights due to disrespecting the club or each other. They all drive nice black Harley's and have lots of tattoos. By watching the show one might get the message that it is ok to be tough,. I mean look at them, they get away with running illegal drugs and guns. Altough I love the show, if someone who was unable to draw the line between right and wrong could have serious issues with the message that FX is putting on television. MTV never really shows music videos anymore, but i'll assume that you meant when they DID show music videos. I believe that the music video is still making people pay for the free view. Seeing the music video makes you want to buy the cd, or ipod etc.. to be able to listen/see it again. Everything that is going on in the background has been placed there for a reason. The nice cars and expensive houses with the best stuff inside makes me want to have those things. The video also has a specific audience that it is aimed at. The difference between rap music and country music is huge and has such a different following. Rap music videos have the cars and houses when country music has an old beat up truck on a dirt road and a hunting dog. Rap music is selling products when country music is selling a lifestyle.
