This piece of writing shows a different side to mortuaries. It shows that there is much more to it than just the fact that it is looked on as being a creepy profession. I think that the author comes to terms with the idea of this as a job because the mortician explains how it makes him happy to see people react to giving their dead family member a proper burial. The author believes that it makes sense that it is the final step in the process of coming to terms with someone’s death. The assumptions he had would probably be most like anyone else’s assumptions upon visiting a funeral home. I think that I would be nervous to go to a funeral home because I wouldn’t know what to expect. The assumptions the author made were very true to what mine would be. I would be prepared for the worst. I would expect the interior to be creepy and dark and the employees to be frightening. The mortician was described as how I would have expected, but the author talks about him as if he is completely nice and normal. The author does a great job describing the atmosphere so it seems like you are there with him. He is not as freaked out by the whole idea when he talks to the mortician. The funeral is supposed to be celebrating the person’s life. It isn’t supposed to be depressing, it should be a stage of acceptance. I think that the amount of detail was helpful in conveying what the funeral home is really like, rather than just what it seems like. I think this essay will help me with my own because it is very descriptive and interesting, which shows that I should use a lot of detail in my writing to convey how exactly the experience is.
