The Last Stop

I believe everyone views death in a similar way. Although it is a new start for the person who passes away, the family and friends are all left to suffer and wish to just see them one more time. The thought of death always seems to bring a depressing, uncomfortable feeling therefore people try to look past it. I agree with Cable when he says that death is ignored and not discussed by adults and children very often. It is a sensitive subject, but when the time comes we have to be prepared even though our emotions tend to make us feel numb. As Cable says, one would picture a mortuary as a large, busy building with beautiful designs, but most are just a casual building blending in with most other places around it. I have been to numerous funeral homes and as uncomfortable as I feel in there, the decorations are quite old and attempting to be homey. Cable does a fantastic job of describing the different rooms and steps that Tim takes him through. The great detail allows me to feel like I am there at Goodbody Mortuaries. This essay truly explains how much work comes along with funeral preparation and that it takes a special person to be able to live and work in a funeral home. The price issue with funerals surprised me. I knew it wasn't cheap, but I did not expect it to be close to the price of a wedding. Another point that Cable made is the assurance we recieve when seeing the body one last time in the casket. It sounds disturbing to see a dead person with pasty facial features, but I know when I had to see my grandparents one last time, it gave me a feeling that I can't quite describe. Although the look is not the same, it was comforting to see them in peace, and not sick or struggling to sit up. Overall Cable did a great job with this essay and I've realized how well I will need to pay attention to all of my surroundings so that I can give plenty of detail.
