Befriending Barbie

I didn't know that Barbie was the most collected item, second only to stamps. When I was little, I loved playing with Barbies. I had almost 30 different dolls, including 1 Ken, 2 Kellys, and 2 Chrissies, 3 different cars, and 1 office phone with an operating conference call function. I think that Barbie is a great way to instill creativity in kids, and she encourages you to use your imagination. I thought that this essay took a really interesting approach to Barbie. I liked that she began in opposition, and then after her experiences, she realized that these collectors had a point. To me, the most pivotal and important point is Judy's story. At that point, Caudron uses pathos to completely convert the audience's point of view. Up until then, I had agreed with her. I didn't really understand the reasoning behind collecting, even though I had fond memories of Barbie. I feel that I now understand collectors. I wouldn't necessarily start collecting 60s Barbies, but I appreciate collectors and their commitment. This essay was written as if she read our prompt before going to the convention, so I think that it will definitely be helpful in the writing process.
